Capital Punishment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 6
Capital Punishment - Essay Example For instance, during the execution of Angel Diaz, via lethal injections, the time taken for him to die, proved to be twice the time that such death was expected to take. Furthermore, some of the witnesses present at the execution were of the opinion that Diaz underwent a significant amount of suffering during the process. Another disquieting feature of this execution was that the medical examiner categorically stated that the lethal injections had not been administered properly (Execution Rules Still Inhumane , 2007). Subsequently, it came to light that these injections had not been administered by a medically trained professional. This execution, which took place in Florida, was effected by injecting a mixture of 3 chemicals. This combination produces extreme pain, which the hapless condemned prisoner cannot express, due to the diabolical inclusion of a paralyzing agent, which constitutes one of these chemicals (Word, 2006). The Floridian authorities have exhibited a total disregard towards rendering executions humane. This was tellingly brought home, by the fact that these authorities ignored the recommendations of a commission appointed by the governor of Florida, which called for the appointment of adequately qualified personnel to carry out the executions, via lethal injections (Execution Rules Still Inhumane , 2007). The Floridian state legislature showed a belated and half ââ¬â hearted response to the fiasco that was the Diaz execution, by declaring a moratorium on executions. Thereafter, a hearing was conducted into the manner, in which lethal injections were administered to the condemned (Florida Mulls Lethal-Injection Problems, 2007). Capital punishment involves high expenditure. In the US, 36 of the 50 states employ the death penalty against some of their criminals. There is much that is distressing and paradoxical with the US in this regard. It had recently come to light that putting a person to death, in

Cyber, popularly called Cyberspace, is an electromagnetic domain, which serves as a spectrum to store, modify and exchange data through the virtually networked association3. At present, the use of cyberspace has increased at a vast magnitude with chances of massive disruptions with the unauthorised intervention, further raising the risks that the capabilities projected can be seized4. As the size of cyberspace is increasing, the complexity of the network is also accelerating in manifold. The gap in understanding the terminology of cyberspace has in turn increased its vulnerabilities to be adequately sound in its effectiveness. The modelling and simulation has also become the most important facet, which needs to be explored and refined with increasing dependency on the networking domain. As the domain is connected with thousands of networks, healthy functioning of the domain has become a myth5. To be noted in this regard, the Department of Defence, which is one of the important depar tments of the government, has become highly

Urban study :: essays research papers
Tampaââ¬â¢s future, something each resident of Tampa and its sprawl should care about. The Tampa Planning Commission offered a chance to residents to come up with ideas, over looked problems, and solutions to be considered and added to Tampaââ¬â¢s Plan. The planning Commission held five meetings that consisted of the resident ââ¬Å"study circleâ⬠and Tampa planners together they hoped to move forward in a progressive and positive way. Session One 10-1-04 Session one was held at New Tampa Library and its topic was ââ¬Å"How is change or the lack of change affecting our community?â⬠I walked into the meeting and immediately I was out of place. In fact I was asked if I was there for the story time across the hall. It was strange to see what I think is the future of Tampa not represented. It was obvious by the story time remark that these people were not expecting my age range to be represented either. Our topic came with a couple of reports for our review and for us to add personal perspective to. The first meeting explained how we were to interact with each other and that it was just a big conversation. The meeting started with introductions, and Tampa was well represented and most people there have lived in more than one part of Tampa. The meeting started with a question to get the conversation started and the Planning Commission members took notes to pull out the major concerns and ideas of what we were saying. The facilitator asked ââ¬Å"Is the character of Tampaââ¬â¢s neighborhoods better than eight years ago?â⬠This got the circle to talk about the individual neighborhoods that make up Tampa. One point realized in examining our neighborhoods is that change is not consistent or even. One problem mentioned was an increase in traffic and its effects on residential areas. Back roads are no longer safe for residents or bikes. One solution to this problem was the widening of I-275. On the other hand, what will this new construction do to one of Tampaââ¬â¢s oldest and most history holding communities of Tampa Heights. The solutions are turning into more effects and impacts . This made me realize that there is still a divide even among one city. Person A who needs to get to his high paying job from far away in sprawl doesnââ¬â¢t care about person Bââ¬â¢s semi lower-income neighborhood or the people or history that make it up.

Asl: Going Deaf for a Day Essay
Going deaf was a different experience for me. It was the most difficult challenge Iââ¬â¢ve ever done. It completely sucked that I couldnââ¬â¢t use most of my electronics. I couldnââ¬â¢t use my phone to call my mom but I was able to text her. I couldnââ¬â¢t listen to music which was the worst because I have to listen to music when Iââ¬â¢m working out, cooking or doing work for school. But being deaf wasnââ¬â¢t all that bad. One of the best things of being deaf was not listening to my mom complain! My mom couldnââ¬â¢t get mad me because she knew I couldnââ¬â¢t hear anything. It was also very peaceful around the house for me. I donââ¬â¢t have to listen to loud vehicles that come down my street, neighbors dog barking and my neighborââ¬â¢s loud spanish music. There some things that I did have to adjust to my daily life. I usually have to call my younger sister to tell her that the food is done or clean her room, but my sister never hears me so I have physically grab her attention. Instead I used a bell to call her or throw a ball at her to get her attention. Also I usually watch my anime shows but since I canââ¬â¢t hear anything, I watched it with subtitles without sound. People usually responded to me screaming at me but they forgot that was going death for a day. My mom had throw something at me to get my attention and my sister would grab me if she needed anything. Or they would write their questions on paper but most of the time I would read their lips There were few difficult things that I went through. When I have no internet, I couldnââ¬â¢t watch my anime or other shows. I had to put my phone on vibrate and always to have it with me. There wasnââ¬â¢t much difficulties besides these but everything else was easy. Iââ¬â¢m Khmer/Laotian and it was hard for me to understand my grandparents since they donââ¬â¢t speak english. I learned that without hearing, itââ¬â¢s hard to communicate with other people and family. Without language, itââ¬â¢s hard to understand somebodyââ¬â¢s culture. ââ¬Ë

The Ice Storm Book vs Movie Critique essays
The Ice Storm Book vs Movie Critique essays There are many ways to tell a story. Back before there were books there as the actual storyteller who could speak out a story. There is also acting where people physically perform a story. Books are another storytelling device that is more permanent, the words are kept and they can be reviewed again and again. Now there are movies, which provide story telling with more an emphasis on visual effects. The question is which way is the best to present a certain type of story. The Ice Storm by Rick Moody was in such a position that one could actually look at both the modern movie and the book version. The story is a realistic story about the Hoods and the Willams. Both of these families were affluent families that lived in New Canaan. The book centers around Wendy and the events that take place during the their thanksgiving in the 70s. The story is pretty simple and is about family strife. Wendy is a typical adolescent exploring her sexuality. At the same time her parents, Ben and Elena are having marital differences. Ben is cheating on his wife with Janey, the wife of his close friend Jim. The irony comes up with Wendy who is has sexual relations with Janey and Jims son Mikey and his younger brother Sandy. Wendys older brother Paul who goes to boarding school returns home and is sexual inexperienced he desires to be with a girl named Libbets. The story centers around a key party that both the Hoods and Willams attend. The highlight of the key party is where people place their keys into a jar and people pick up the keys of different people to have sex with the owner of the keys. At this party Ben expects to have sex with Janey, but instead Janey blows him off and has sex with someone else. This night Elena also finds out about the affair and has an affair with Jim, Janeys wife. Now while both of the parents are away Mikey wants to see Wendy, but instead Wendy fools around with Sandy. Frank Sinatra As An Italian American Term Paper
Frank Sinatra As An Italian American - Term Paper Example A midwife reportedly injured him during the birth process and he was born without breathing until his grandmother held him under water to force him to come to life. (RatPack, 2011) While Sinatra recovered well enough to live a long and successful life, the story of his birth illustrates how different life was in the early 20th century. In 1915, the farmhouse and log cabin were still the predominant form of community habitation in America, and most people lacked basic education and health care for their families. The public safety net taken for granted now in social security and other benefits programs did not exist, nor did modern medicine, making survival difficult for the poor immigrants like Sinatraââ¬â¢s family who came to America. While infant mortality rates in birth were very high at that time in relation to now, it can also be said that most early Americans experienced the same threats of disease, nutrition, poverty, and livelihood as Sinatraââ¬â¢s family, but something made him different to stand out from the crowd. Frank Sinatra allegedly won a talent contest in order to earn his big break into show business at age 23 in the New York area. (RatPack, 2011) In this regard, his upbringing in New Jersey inevitably led him to New York which was the center of entertainment as well as industry, finance, and business. Sinatraââ¬â¢s official biography tells of him being inspired by the music of Bing Crosby when he was a youth, and this ââ¬Å"big bandâ⬠sound of white jazz would become his musical trademark. Sinatraââ¬â¢s early career was made through singing at dinner lounges, and he began to find some work on local radio programs in New Jersey. The jazz and big band musician Harry James discovered and signed Sinatra to a... Frank Sinatra was a controversial Italian American who was one of the greatest role models of his generation. His life and public activity helped define what it is to be a pop star and celebrity in America. While his music was not groundbreaking or innovative technically, it reached a wide audience drawn together by the events of WWII and helped them define their feelings as a nation. Sinatra was one of the earliest stars on radio, TV, and motion pictures, which gave him a larger than life appearance and influence on his generation. Whether or not he used his power, wealth, and fame for the most socially beneficial or progressive causes is really not an issue of history, for he represented himself according to a dynamic that was self ââ¬âdetermined as he expressed so vividly in the song, ââ¬Å"My Wayâ⬠. Whether or not he was just, fair, honest, friendly, and kind to others would seem to be a minor issue, because he seized the path to fame, wealth, power, and affluence that most all of his contemporaries only dreamed about. Nevertheless, as a role model of rugged individualism as symbolized by the post-war American culture, and as an Italian American celebrity of the 20th Century, there are few who can compare to Sinatra in stature and influence.

Ban Ki-Moon's Leadership Style Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Ban Ki-Moon's Leadership Style - Research Paper Example However, Ban seems to be silent on these issues. He is not at all asking United States or Israel to stop their massacres at different parts of the world. Critics of Ban believe that he is keeping a pro-American stand in his functioning. Ian William (2010) pointed out that in a speech delivered at 22nd Summit Conference of the League of Arab States held in Sirte, Libya on March 27, 2010, ââ¬Å"Ban commented on issues related to the situation in Gaza and stated his support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian stateâ⬠(Ban Ki-moon's Soft-Spoken Approach Belies His Straightforward Words, p.20). Even though Ban criticized some of the actions of Israel in this speech, he was keen to use only soft words to criticize Israel. In fact many people believe that he had no other way to avoid criticizing Israel in this meeting since the meeting was organized by Arab states. On the other hand, scholars such as Ian Williams believe that Ban is successfully handling some of the ma tters involved by Israel. He has pointed out that ââ¬Å"Ban Ki-Moon's persuasion forced Israel to accept an international fact-finding inquiry into the Gaza flotilla assaultâ⬠(Ban Ki-moon Engages Israeli Politicians, as Israel Remains Mum on Kosovo Precedent, p.19). Earlier, Israel was adamant in their approaches and they never accepted the offers to allow any international agencies to interfere in their matters. They never allowed any international agencies to enter Israelââ¬â¢s territories to conduct any enquiries. However, Ban was successful in persuading Israel to allow a neutral enquiry by an international body about Gaza flotilla assault. Schlesinger (2010) mentioned that America sidelined United Nations while dealing... This paper deals with the major criticism labeled against Ban Ki-moonââ¬â¢s leadership is that ââ¬Å"he appointed his own people and stamped his own priorities on the organizationâ⬠. In other words, Ban was keen in appointing those people who are supporters of his policies. While appointing UN officials at various parts of the world or while posting UN peace keeping forces at different parts of the world, Ban gave more emphasize to preserve his interests. ââ¬Å"He tries to cement his position a little wonkily through issues, with the world financial crisis sharing the top of the priority list with global warmingâ⬠. Many people believe that Ban like to have one more term in UN secretaryââ¬â¢s office and for that purpose he deliberately trying to gain support from all major powers. Even though Ban is commanding respect from all the major powers in the world, he failed to command respect from some of the problematic countries. For example, it is reported that ââ¬Å"Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is facing international pressure to end a crackdown on anti-government protestors, is not taking the U.N. chief's phone callsâ⬠.
